The Buddha spoke of the eight worldly winds of change: pleasure and pain, gain and loss, praise and blame, fame and insignificance. Every human life is a mix of the changing “fortunes” that arise out of conditions over which we can never exert full control. If we have the view that our happiness depends on having pleasure, gain, praise and fame we will be constantly thrown off balance as we inevitably experience pain, loss, blame and insignificance. There is a happiness that is not at the mercy of these winds of change. It comes from the cultivation of equanimity, of letting go of things being other than what they are and learning to be with whatever we are experiencing. Equanimity makes it possible to stand in the middle of the constantly changing circumstances of life without the suffering of clinging.
We will explore this teaching of the Buddha and its application in our lives through instruction, sitting and walking meditation, personal reflection and group discussion.
This retreat is appropriate for both those new to mindfulness practice and those with experience.
To assure everyone has a safe and wholesome retreat, we ask each retreatant to honor The Five Precepts throughout the retreat. Read more about The Five Precepts here.
